Habitat Information

Distribution/Collection Locales:

Found only in the eastern drainages south of the Masoala peninsula (not including the Mananara river). Its southern most limit is still in debate.

Conservation Status:

Due to this species ability to tolerate brackish water and its wide range it is not considered to be endangered.

Typical Habitat:

Commonly found at lower elevations along the eastern coast. Found in both Lacustrine and riverine habitats, although the latter is more common.

Husbandry Information

Origin of Captives:

 

Aggressiveness:

Slightly aggressive by Madagascan cichlid standards.

Multiple generations live and reproduce in a 440 gallon for the author.

Aggression is evident in tighter confines and during periods of reproduction.

Tank Size:

Recommend 75 - 110 gallon, more for breeding

Feeding:

In captivity

Will accept flake, bloodworms, chopped earthworms, tubifex/blackworms, and some pelleted food.

Water Parameters:

Undemanding

pH: <7.7; Temperature: 75-85 °F; dGH & dKH: 1-5°

Tank Filtration/Set-up:

Smaller systems using undergravel filtration and weekly 30-50% water changes

Larger systems using cartridge or pressurized sand filtration.
