Conservation Status:

Sparks & Rush note that this species is found only from small forested to moderately degraded tributaries in the upper to middle reaches of the Mananara and Rienana rivers (Sparks & Rush, 2005).

They also comment that given Bedotia albomarginata's limited distribution any deforestation in the region could quickly, and negatively, impact the population levels (Sparks & Rush, 2005).

A. Saunders found that population numbers near the Vevembe camp had decreased from 2000 to 2006; while those in the Ampisikia seemed to have remained strong. Human encroachment and deforestation had also increased in the area immediately surrounding the Vevembe field camp, perhaps leading to the decrease in Bedotia numbers observed (Saunders, unpublished data).

Typical Habitat:

Riverine; collected over both sandy and rocky substrate with and without instream vegetation.

Slow to moderately flowing currents; undercut banks; with and without overhead vegetation.

Typical Water Parameters:

pH: 6.10-6.80

Temperature: 65.0-69.0 °F

Conductivity: 160-250 µS
